Seven details to locate before signing a German employment contract

A contract can look complete while leaving the cross-border working pattern unclear. Start by locating the place of work. A German office address does not automatically describe days worked from your home abroad.

Terms worth marking

Read the clauses on working time, probation, termination notice, annual leave, business travel, remote work and expense reimbursement. Check whether a separate home-office agreement is referenced but not attached.

Your gross salary is only one part of payroll preparation. Ask which tax and social-insurance details the employer expects, and explain early that your habitual residence remains outside Germany.

Write down the real weekly pattern

Estimate where you will physically perform each workday. This factual pattern is more useful to an insurer or tax adviser than the broad phrase “hybrid work.” If the pattern changes later, ask whether a fresh assessment is needed.

This guide is general orientation, not a conclusion about your individual legal or tax position.
